Hitachi developed its microactuator MEMS device
for its one
inch hard disk drive (microdrive) at its Hitachi
San Jose Research Center. The microactuator is four microns thick and 40 microns in high.
The microactuator can, in part, be attributed to the hard disk drive's market success. Hitachi reported in December of 2004 that it had shipped over 5 million of the one-inch hard drives. The drive was introduced in 1999. Shipments for 2005 are anticipated to exceed 5 million if current market
conditions hold.
