GridPoint, Inc., a company that provides intelligent energy management appliances to a broad range of markets, reported that federal will be required to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent by 2015 (as measured on a per gross square foot basis). This is a result of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 signed by President Bush.  The law initially requires a 2 percent reduction in 2006 in federal buildings , according to GridPoint.  GridPoint apparently has the means to meet that requirement. The company said that its GridPoint's 2006 product releases have the capacity to  lower energy costs by 10 to 15 percent.

The company also reported that the law creates tax credits for “commercial and private solar installations or related equipment such as GridPoint Connect”. That small refrigerator-sized equipment is used to integrate a variety of alternatives and enables companies and consumers the ability to sell energy to utilities. GridConnect also reported that “businesses can claim a federal tax credit equal to 30 percent of the cost of GridPoint Connect, with no dollar limit on the credit.” The company also indicated that homeowners are also eligible for the 30 percent credit, but are limited to a $2,000 cap per system. GridPoint's products range in price from $6,000 to $16,000.
