Naturally Vitamins, a subsidiary of Marlyn Nutraceuticals,
has reported that research published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" indicates that gastrointestinal health
may be essential to healthy bones. Specifically the company pointed to findings that suggest a nutrient called inulin increase
calcium absorption in young adults. Inulin’s role in the absorption of calcium is thought to be related to its ability
to nourish beneficial bacteria found inside the digestive system. This in turn reduces the levels of toxins in the digestive
system, which creates a better environment for the absorption of nutrients.
Inulin, which is derived from Jerusalem artichokes,
can be found in Naturally Vitamins’ Inuflora product. According to Joe Lehmann, CEO of Naturally Vitamins, "Inuflora
contains inulin which is good for overall health because malabsorption, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and weight
problems can all be related to the health of the gut." Naturally Vitamins also indicated that the sugar chains from the Jerusalem
artichoke were longer than those obtained from the chicory root, another source of inulin. Longer chains help further support
intestinal microflora.

Wild Blueberries Health Benefits to Be Further Explored
According to the Wild Blueberry Association of North America two
new research efforts are underway to further study the effects of wild blueberries on health. At the USDA’s Arkansas
Children's Nutrition Research Center, Ron Prior Ph.D. will lead a berry investigation related to long-term health.
At the National Institute on Aging (NIA), Mark Wilson, M.S., Cathy Wolkow, Ph.D, and Donald Ingram, Ph.D., will study worms
called nematodes, as part of their research on the effect of Wild Blueberries on longetivity and stress. According to Mark
Wilson, wild blueberries are just as effective as pharmaceuticals on worms, “Our preliminary work shows that Wild Blueberries
are as effective as any pharmaceutical tested on the worms." Dr. Ingram added with comments about longetivity and food choices,
"We've done a lot of investigative work with caloric restriction in animal models, including these worms, to determine its
impact on longevity. After years of extensive research, only caloric restriction has been shown to impact longevity in a robust
manner. This new, invertebrate research appears to be an exciting area of work for us. Our early findings show that food choices
may be equally as important as caloric restriction."
Summing up the research goals was Susan Davis, MS, RD,
Nutrition Advisor to the Wild Blueberry Association of North America "Research interest in Wild Blueberries is at an all-time
high. Healthy eating throughout life greatly decreases the risk for all the diseases of aging including cardiovascular disease,
cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts, Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. It's this preventive effect
that Wild Blueberry researchers want to explore further."
