Germany Develops Low-Power, Ultra-High-Brightness Red Micro OLED

Recently, the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (Fraunhofer IPMS) in Germany announced the successful development of a new red Micro OLED microdisplay that delivers both ultra-high brightness and high efficiency. The first innovative achievements of this technology are set to be officially unveiled at the SID Europe Mid-Year Conference in Lisbon, Portugal.

In today’s wearable technology sector, Micro OLED microdisplays are widely favored for their compact form factor, high-definition image quality, and low power consumption. The latest breakthrough from Fraunhofer IPMS takes the brightness performance of such systems to an entirely new level. The microdisplay can not only render dynamic fully graphical symbols, but also significantly improves the accuracy of precision alignment and greatly simplifies the optical assembly process.

 

In terms of technical architecture, this new display builds on the institute’s long-standing expertise. It is manufactured using standard CMOS semiconductor processes, with a silicon-based backplane serving as the core foundation for the OLED technology.

According to Uwe Vogel, Head of the Microdisplay and Sensor Department at the institute, this red Micro OLED microdisplay achieves a peak brightness of up to 35,000 cd/m² while maintaining ultra-low power consumption. The display adopts a proprietary ultra-low-power technology: when updating an image, the system only adjusts pixels that have changed instead of refreshing the entire screen, which radically cuts down energy use.

High brightness performance has long been a core technical challenge for red Micro OLEDs. By developing a new OLED stack structure integrated with high-efficiency materials, the research team has successfully overcome this bottleneck, enabling the microdisplay to present data clearly even in intense direct sunlight.

 

In addition, this new Micro OLED stack structure has excellent compatibility and can be flexibly transferred to backplanes of various specifications. Scientists at Fraunhofer IPMS noted that they will carry out customized development of high-brightness Micro OLED microdisplay products for specific customers and application scenarios going forward.
