Long-life blue OLEDs get a major breakthrough

Gyeongsang University recently announced that Professor Yun-Hee Kimof the Department of Chemistry at Gyeongsang University has succeeded inrealizing high-performance blue organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs)with higher stability through joint research with the research group ofProfessor Kwon Hyuk at Gyeonghee University .

This study starts from the fact that phosphorescent dopant materialsbind to heavy metals such as platinum, and concludes that the stability of luminescent materials can be greatly improved depending on the presenceor absence of substituents introduced at specific positions. Through this, the research team proposed a material design technique that overcomes thestability problem of blue light emitting devices while providing high efficiency, long lifetime and high color purity.

Prof. Yunhee Kim of Gyeongsang University said, "Ensuring the long-life characteristics of blue OLED technology is one of the fundamentaltasks to accomplish OLED display technology. This study is a good exampleof the importance of system integration research and collaboration betweenmaterials and device groups in solving problems."

The research was supported by the Display Innovative Process PlatformConstructi on Project of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources ofKorea, the Natio nal Research Foundation of Korea Lamp Program and the Samsung Display OLED Research Center at Gyeongsang National University. The paper was published in the April 6 issue of the internationally renownedacademic journal Nature Communications.
