Samsung Display and LG Display Unveil New OLED Technologies

At South Korea's largest display industry exhibition (K-Display) held on the 7th, Samsung Display and LG Display showcased next-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technologies.

Samsung Display highlighted its leading technology at the exhibition by presenting an ultra-fine silicon OLED panel with a clarity 8-10 times higher than that of the latest smartphones.

The 1.3-inch White (W) ultra-fine silicon panel boasts a resolution of 4000 pixels per inch (PPI), which is 8 times higher than that of the latest smartphones (approximately 500 PPI). Samsung Display exhibited a binocular demonstration product that allows viewers to experience the image quality of ultra-fine silicon with both eyes, just like wearing extended reality (XR) devices, thereby enhancing understanding.

To demonstrate the durability of the OLED panel installed in foldable smartphones, they also showed a folding test process in which a smartphone was repeatedly folded and unfolded in ice cream next to a refrigerator.

Samsung Display also showcased for the first time a microLED with a maximum brightness of 6000 nits, suitable for next-generation smartwatches. This is the highest level among publicly displayed watch products so far, being 2000 nits brighter than the 4000-nit microLED watch product exhibited at CES 2025 in the United States in January last year.

The product has a resolution of 326 PPI, and approximately 700,000 red, green, and blue LED chips, each smaller than 30 micrometers (µm, one millionth of a meter), are placed inside the square watch panel. The display can be bent freely, enabling various designs, and even when bent, the brightness and color do not change depending on the viewing angle.

MicroLED is a self-luminous display technology that does not require an independent light source, with each chip realizing pixel display. It is highly regarded as a next-generation display component due to its high brightness and low energy consumption.

LG Display showcased the latest technologies such as large, medium, small, and automotive panels under the theme of "Display Technologies Creating the Future" at the exhibition.

LG Display particularly attracted attention by exhibiting an 83-inch OLED panel applying the 4th generation OLED technology announced this year. By displaying the extra-large panel, it conducted a picture quality comparison demonstration between the previous generation and the 4th generation OLED panels, showcasing the three-dimensional sense and rich color reproduction of the new technology.

LG Display also unveiled the world's fastest OLED monitor panel for the first time.

The 27-inch OLED panel (QHD) with 540Hz can achieve a maximum ultra-high refresh rate of up to 720Hz (HD) according to user needs.

In addition, they exhibited the 45-inch 5K2K (5120×2160) OLED panel, which currently has the world's highest resolution. They also displayed a concept car capable of fully autonomous driving and introduced in-vehicle display technologies and products.
