On March 27, Samsung Display (SDC) announced on March 26 that it has successfully developed a new QuantumBlack surface film for QD-OLED monitor panels. Compared with previous generations, the film reduces light reflectivity by 20% and boosts surface hardness from 2H to 3H.

Samsung Display stated that ambient light reflected on the screen impairs users’ ability to perceive true black levels in real-world usage scenarios, an issue that QuantumBlack effectively addresses.
As a self-emissive display technology, QD-OLED can achieve pure black by completely turning off pixel power. However, bright ambient light reflecting off the screen in practical use makes it difficult to experience genuine black levels. To solve this problem, Samsung began developing low-reflection films for QD-OLED monitor panels at an early stage, and the new QuantumBlack film represents a substantial upgrade over its predecessor.
Furthermore, the company plans to adopt QuantumBlack™ across new products launching this year, with the film delivering a 20% reduction in reflectivity compared to existing solutions.
Black reproduction capability is a critical specification, especially for gaming monitors. In gaming content, perfect black levels clearly define the boundary between objects and backgrounds, adding depth and dimensionality to scenes and enhancing immersion. The QuantumBlack technology also improves panel durability. Internal tests show that the hardness of QD-OLED panels has been raised from 2H to 3H with the new film. Panels with lower hardness are prone to scratches during transportation or cleaning, while 3H hardness represents exceptional strength that resists scratching even from fingernail contact.
QuantumBlack technology will be applied to all of Samsung Display’s new monitor panel products in 2026. Downstream customers have adopted a range of commercial brand names for the technology, including ASUS’s BlackShield, GIGABYTE’s ObsidianShield, and MSI’s DarkArmor.
