ITRI in Taiwan Develops Rapid Testing Technology for Dual-function Micro LED Display Modules

According to a report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan has successfully developed a high-accuracy dual-function "Micro LED Display Module Rapid Testing Technology" that can simultaneously test color and light source angles by focusing on color calibration and optical inspection.

Lin Zengyao, Executive Director of the Measurement Technology Development Center at ITRI, stated that Micro LED technology is highly advanced and does not have standardized specifications in the market. Therefore, custom development is necessary to meet the unique requirements of brand manufacturers. This lack of precedents in testing or repairing Micro LED modules prompted ITRI to initially focus on addressing the industry's urgent need for color uniformity testing.

Due to the small size of Micro LED, the camera pixels of traditional display measurement devices are not sufficient for testing requirements. ITRI's research team used a "repeated exposure color calibration technology" to achieve color balance on Micro LED panels through repeated exposures and analyzed color uniformity using optical calibration technology to achieve accurate measurements.

Currently, ITRI's research team has installed multi-angle light collection lenses on existing optical measurement platforms. By gathering light from different angles in a single exposure and utilizing proprietary software analysis techniques, the light sources are simultaneously displayed on the same interface, enabling pinpoint measurements. This not only significantly reduces testing time by 50%, but also successfully expands the traditional 100-degree light source angle detection to approximately 120 degrees.

It is noteworthy that with the support of the Technology Department, ITRI has successfully developed this high-accuracy dual-function "Micro LED Display Module Rapid Testing Technology." It utilizes a two-step process to rapidly analyze the color uniformity and angle rotation characteristics of micro light sources, providing customized testing for various new products. Compared to traditional equipment, it improves measurement efficiency by 50%. Through enhanced technological testing, ITRI aims to assist the industry in overcoming the challenges of mass production and entering the next generation of display technology.
