Seoul National University Develops High-Performance Transparent OLED for AR Applications

According to reports, the research team led by Professor Yongtaek Hong from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the College of Engineering, Seoul National University, has successfully developed a high-performance transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED). The device adopts a highly conductive transparent metal mesh top electrode fabricated via selective metal deposition technology. The related findings have been published in the journal Materials Horizons and selected as the front cover of the current issue.

Transparent OLEDs have drawn extensive attention in next-generation application scenarios including advanced displays, augmented reality (AR), automotive displays and smart windows, owing to their bidirectional light emission capability. However, while conventional transparent electrodes have delivered high optical transparency and excellent electrical performance, they still face constraints when directly integrated into OLED devices, as their fabrication processes may inflict chemical or physical damage to the underlying organic layers. The newly developed metal mesh top electrode structure effectively addresses this issue and elevates the overall device performance.
