South Korean Media: LG Innotek Begins Supplying OLED FMM to LG Display

On April 20, South Korean media outlet ETnews reported that LG Innotek has begun supplying its self-developed Fine Metal Masks (FMM) for mobile OLED panels to LG Display, which is now using these masks for mass OLED production.

An industry insider stated: “The two companies have jointly researched and developed FMM technology for many years, and the recent supply to OLED mass production lines marks a major milestone for their efforts. Initial shipment volumes remain small, but adoption will be gradually expanded going forward based on production performance and operational stability.”

The newly supplied FMMs have been partially deployed at LG Display’s 6th-generation OLED production line in Yongin, which manufactures panels for smartphones and IT devices.

FMM is a core precision component and consumable in the OLED evaporation process. It enables organic materials to deposit through micro fine openings to form precise display pixels. FMM is primarily made of Invar alloy with an ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion. Its manufacturing involves extremely high technical barriers, requiring micrometer-level opening accuracy (within ±2.5μm). Large-size FMM must also overcome deformation caused by gravity and thermal stress, with stringent requirements for material uniformity.

Previously, South Korea’s display industry relied heavily on imported Japanese FMM products, with Japan’s major materials firm DNP (Dai Nippon Printing) holding dominant market control in this sector.

The report noted that LG Innotek launched its in-house FMM development around 2021, as South Korea pushed for localized production to reduce reliance on Japanese DNP. While multiple companies pursued FMM development through government-backed projects, only LG Innotek and Poongwon Precision have secured mass-production capabilities to date.

Poongwon Precision, in partnership with Samsung Display, is in the final approval phase for FMM mass production and is expected to begin full-scale manufacturing as early as the second half of this year. With LG Innotek’s FMM already adopted in LG Display’s mass production, LG Group has taken the lead in diversifying its FMM supply chain.

By diversifying its FMM sourcing, LG Display aims to strengthen the competitiveness of its small and medium-sized OLED business. Localized FMM procurement will help secure cost advantages and stabilize supply chain resilience. In particular, close collaboration among LG Group affiliates is expected to maximize overall synergy across technology, production and materials.
