This panel manufacturer plans to use AI to increase productivity by 30%.

On August 5th, according to South Korean media reports, LG Display (LGD) plans to drive artificial intelligence transformation (AX) by applying AI across all business sectors, aiming to increase work productivity by 30% by 2028. Based on this plan, LGD will further consolidate its differentiated competitive advantages by maximizing productivity in core areas of the display industry, such as timely development, yield rates, and costs.

At the "AX Online Seminar" held on the 5th, LGD announced that this year will mark the first year of AX innovation. The company will apply independently developed AI to all business sectors, from development and production to office operations, and promote AX innovation.

By accelerating AX innovation, LGD will strengthen its OLED-centric business structure, improve cost efficiency and profitability, and accelerate the company's growth.

"1 Month → 8 Hours": Changes After Introducing Design AI

LGD has introduced "Design AI" in the product development phase, which can optimize and propose design drawings. As a first step, LGD completed the development of the "EDGE Design AI Algorithm" for irregular display panels in June this year.

Unlike regular display panels, irregular display panels feature curved edges or narrow bezels in their outer edges. Therefore, the compensation patterns formed at the panel edges need to be individually adjusted according to the display's outer edge design. Since different compensation patterns had to be designed manually each time, errors or defects were prone to occur. In case of failures, the design had to start from scratch, taking an average of one month to complete a design drawing.

With the "EDGE Design AI Algorithm," LGD can effectively handle irregular designs, significantly reduce errors, and drastically shorten the design time to 8 hours. The AI automatically designs patterns suitable for curved surfaces or narrow bezels, greatly reducing time consumption. Designers can now allocate the saved time to higher-level tasks such as judging drawing adaptability and improving design quality.

In addition, LGD has introduced Optical Design AI, which optimizes the viewing angle changes of OLED colors. Due to the need for multiple simulations, optical design typically takes more than 5 days. With AI, the design, verification, and proposal process can be completed within 8 hours.

LGD plans to prioritize AI applications in panel substrate design, which can quickly improve product quality, and gradually expand to materials, components, circuits, and structures.

Introducing "AI Production System" in the Entire OLED Process

The core of innovation in manufacturing competitiveness lies in the "AI Production System." LGD plans to fully apply the AI production system to all OLED manufacturing processes this year, starting with mobile devices and then expanding to OLEDs for TVs, IT equipment, and automobiles.

To overcome the high complexity of OLED manufacturing, LGD has integrated professional knowledge in the manufacturing process into the AI production system. The AI can automatically analyze various potential causes of abnormalities in OLED manufacturing and propose solutions. With the introduction of AI, data analysis capabilities have been infinitely expanded, and the speed and accuracy of analysis have been significantly improved.

The time required for quality improvement has been reduced from an average of 3 weeks to 2 days. As the production volume of qualified products increases, the annual cost savings exceed 200 billion KRW.

Moreover, employee engagement has been enhanced. Time previously spent on manual data collection and analysis can now be redirected to higher-value tasks such as proposing solutions and implementing improvement measures.

In the future, LGD plans to enable AI to independently judge and propose productivity improvement plans, and even automatically control some simple equipment improvements. The company also intends to integrate it with "EXAONE" from LG AI Research Institute to further enhance intelligence.

LGD's Exclusive AI Assistant "HI-D"

To drive productivity innovation for employees, including those in production roles, LGD has launched its independently developed AI assistant "HI-D." "HI-D" is an abbreviation of "HI DISPLAY," representing a friendly and intelligent AI assistant that connects "Humans" and "AI." The name was selected through an internal company competition.

Currently, "HI-D" offers services such as AI knowledge search, real-time translation for video conferences, meeting minutes writing, AI summarization and drafting of emails. In the second half of the year, "HI-D" will also feature document assistant functions, capable of handling more advanced AI tasks such as drafting PPTs for reports.

Its distinctive feature is "HI-D Search." Having learned approximately 2 million internal company documents, "HI-D" can provide optimal answers to work-related questions. Since launching quality search services in June last year, it has now expanded to cover standards, best practices, system manuals, and company training materials.

After introducing "HI-D," daily work productivity has increased by an average of about 10%. LGD plans to continuously enhance "HI-D" to boost work productivity by over 30% within three years.

Through independent development, LGD has also reduced costs associated with subscribing to external AI assistants (approximately 10 billion KRW per year).

The "brain" of "HI-D" is the "EXAONE" large language model (LLM) developed by LG AI Research Institute. As an independently developed LLM by the LG Group, it offers high security and fundamentally prevents information leakage.

LGD will continue to enhance its competitiveness in the global display market through differentiated AX capabilities, lead the next-generation display market in the future, and consolidate its global leadership in high-end OLED products.
