Research Firm: Global Display Panel Shipments Forecast to Drop 6% in 2026

On June 15, a tracking report from market research firm Omdia showed that the global display panel demand outlook for 2026 has been sharply revised down. Unit demand is projected to fall 6% year on year, a steep downgrade from the earlier forecast of a 2% decline. The growth rate of display panel area demand has also been cut from the previously expected 6% to just 1%.

Omdia stated that the main drivers include geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and rising supply chain costs fueled by climbing oil and memory prices. These factors have pushed manufacturers to raise prices, which may dampen consumer demand in 2026 and beyond.

According to the data, TV panel demand is expected to decline 2.0% year on year in 2026. While panel purchases were robust in late 2025, driven by Chinese TV makers stocking up inventory amid historically low prices, TV manufacturers are set to raise retail prices to cope with higher supply chain costs. The laptop display panel market faces even more severe challenges, with its demand forecast lowered by around 7.2 million units compared with the previous projection.

Omdia pointed out that display panel suppliers will confront a tough operating environment in 2026. As demand weakens, capacity utilization management will become critically important. Device makers will have to strike a balance between competitive pricing and rising production costs, which may lead to specification downgrades or shrinking profit margins.
