Sharp’s LCD panel production will continue to shrink, some LCD factories considering leasing

Earlier, according to Japanese media reports, Sharp production of large-size LCD panels SDP plant will be discontinued in June. Sharp Vice President Masahiro Hoshitsu recently revealed in an interview with Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Sharp is reducing the size of the LCD panel manufacturing plant in Mie Prefecture, and plans to lease some of the buildings at the Kameyama plant (Kameyama City, Mie Prefecture) andthe Mie plant (Taki Town, Mie Prefecture) to other companies.

The goal is to reduce the surplus equipment at the LCD plant and return to profitability as soon as possible. Sharp Kameyama plant is mainly engaged in the LCD panel business, mainly the the production of small and medium-sized LCD panels for automobiles or tablet PCs, but the business is still in the red. The plant is known for its "global Kameyama model". Due to deteriorating market conditions,it is reported that part of the plant's production has been halted.

Sharp's final profit for the fiscal year ending March 2023 fell into a huge deficit of 260.8 billion yen (12.418 billion yuan) due to the continued downturn in its pillar LCD panel business. The main reason for the loss is the Sakai City 10-generation panel plant SDP as the center, the LCD panel related workshops / equipment to provide 188.4 billion yen (about 8.97 billion yuan)of impairment.
